Primary Program...

Nancy was in the Primary program so we loaded up the bus to support her. We were able to take Cristian, Bryancito, Dayana, Laura, and Christian; with the help of Carlee, Michelle, Louisa, and EmRee.

All was well until Bryan wanted more sacrament breadm Cristian and Bryan started fighting over books, and Dayana needed to go "pepe" and "popo" every 10 minutes. Dayana got restless but was able to entertain her with quiet activities. Cristian kept yelling out so finally I grabbed him from the row behind me and took him outside. Bryan was happy with cookies and all the books because Cristian was taken outside. How do people do this every Sunday??

Nancy did great! She always looked at us when she sang songs and smiled. She memorized her part and did wonderful. She was bashful and laughed but still nailed it. Way to go Nancy!!

Presidential Election...

2016 Presidential Election
Hillary Clinton vs. Donald Trump

Tuesday, November 8, 2016 is a day that will never be forgotten. Donald Trump won the election and is now our next President. Living in Ecuador the past 15 months, I haven't really bothered getting involved in the politics. Even living in the States, I'm not all that involved but I at least hear a lot more about it than living in another country. I've heard bits and pieces about each of their campaigns and policy changes. I've seen each of them speak on various occasions. My opinion of both Hillary and Trump...neither one should be President!

I did not vote. And I'm not sure who I would have voted for when it really came down to casting my ballot. However, it would have been really cool to live in a time where a FEMALE was our President. How amazing it would feel to know that the United States of America appointed their FIRST female President. Maybe next time....

I didn't give much thought when Donald Trump won the election. No matter who would have won, we are damned if we do and damned if we don't. The United States is falling apart and I'm not sure if things will ever get better. After Trump had won, a lot of people were posting on social media the dangers that just entered into their lives. Donald Trump is sexist, racist, and discriminates any person who is not a WHITE, MALE, AMERICAN. Knowing this, I still didn't understand why people were reacting in fear. Then, I watched this --- day-1-in-trumps-america

My heart aches! How can there be so much HATE in America right now? People have been sharing this song this week, not just because of the election but also because it is Veteran's Day...

"God Bless the U.S.A."

Yes, the flag stands for FREEDOM. Yes, I will not FORGET the men and women who have died to give me this RIGHT. I am PROUD to be an American because of the people who FIGHT for me every single day.

But what about those people who are Muslim? Refugee's seeking peace and tranquility in America? My friends who are gay? What about them? Who are FIGHTING for them in America? The last couple days I have been sadden with thoughts that my friends and family are in danger.

I reached out to some friends who are minority, to offer support and prayers that they will be kept safe. Here are some of their responses...

Ayan, Somali, Muslim--
"...It's seriously traumatizing. It's like 9/11 all over again but this time its 11/9. I don't know what'll happen but I hope we don't have to relive racism all over again..."

Carlos, Puerto Rican--

"I appreciate you checking in and sending love. We shall see how long and how bad this nightmare is. At least the truth about this country is out. No more hiding the realities of this society."

Lauren, Lesbian, Married, Adorable Baby--

"Thank you Kirstin... truly and sincerely, thank you... I feel terrified of why might and could happen. I refuse to give into my suddenly invasive and painful thoughts that maybe the world isn't as kind and open-minded, and accepting as I have always believed."

These people are not free. You have no freedom when you're life is in constant danger. I pray for my dear friends and family. I pray that President Trump will make a difference in our world.

I also pray for the 2nd Coming. #voteforJesus

Trolls...

I was able to take some the children to the movies today. I was very excited since I've been wanting to do this since I've been here. I was able to take Laura, Dayana, and Cristian. Nancy was planned to go but she got in trouble during the week so that ruined her chances of going and Cristian took her place. Carlee and Michelle also came to help with the children.

It was so fun! I loved it! Although the movie was in Spanish, the kids enjoyed it and that made me very happy. Laura loved eating her popcorn and dancing whenever music came on. Cristian would clap his hands and "EEK!" at certain parts in the movie. Dayana did pretty well considering this was her first movie! She got restless towards the end but she came and sat with me which was pretty special. I believe Laura and Cristian have been to the movies before but at 2.5 years old, Dayana saw her FIRST movie!

I will cherish carrying Laura in and out of taxis, and up to her seat in the middle of the theater. Watching her eat popcorn and drink Fiora from a straw. Dancing whenever a song came on. And having her attack me from the back seat on the taxi on our way home. This girl makes me a very happy "mawwmee!"

Cristian's genuine excitement and joy makes me happy. We got into the theater early and he was losing patience that the movie wasn't turning on. He ate a little popcorn before the movie but once the movie started, there was no distractions with this kid. He was fun to watch as he was so involved with the movie and what was happening. I am happy he enjoyed it!

I will always remember dancing to "Can't Stop The Feeling" by Justin Timberlake with Dayana. I don't recall what my first movie was but I will remember taking Dayana to her first movie. She is such a joy to have around. A little dramatic at times, but watching her grow this past year has been so fun to experience. Love my little Daya!

3 Months To Go...

I have 3 more months left in Ecuador then back to the States. I've been feeling awfully sad and not feeling well the last couple weeks. Last week I woke up unbelievably sad. I don't now what it was. I had particular reason to be sad, I didn't watch any sad movies before going to bed, no one had died; I just sad. I took the next couple days off because maybe I was coming down with a cold and my body needed to rest. Maybe there were some built up emotions I wasn't allowing to get out but they still never came. However, I did sleep for two days so maybe that's all I needed....

This week my stomach has been killing me. It's some sort of gut-wrenching pain that won't subside. I've been drinking a lot of chamomile and honey tea to see if that will help. Isn't there some sort of tea out there that helps with stomach issues? I think so but I don't know which one. I just went with the one that tastes good! Hopefully it helps...

I haven't been spending a whole lot of time with the children lately. I want the volunteers to have their opportunity at the volunteer experience so it's been keeping me distant. Maybe that's why I'm so bummed? I haven't spent a lot of the time with the kiddos.

The children are all doing well and are healthy. Last month we had a Superhero Birthday Party for Martin and Christian. Christian turned 16 and Martin turned 18. We had superhero decorations and funfetti cupcakes. We played a bunch of games but my favorite was showing them all Pie Face. I had brought it back with me to play with the children and the tias. It was a blast! The tias were kind of hesitant but of course Catalina, Ana Maria, Juan Diego, and Amy got right in there. Martin wasn't sure about getting cream in face (he doesn't like getting dirty!) But Jorge and Laura loved it! Jorge busted up laughing when the cream went on his face! I didn't think Laura would do it because she doesn't like getting dirty but when I asked if she wanted to do it, she ripped off her blue poncho and wheeled herself up to the table. She was ready for it! The cream went on her face and she just giggled and continued to eat it. It was great! The boys got some fun gifts; kites, puzzles, notebooks, and colored pencils. The best present was their brand new blue wheelchairs! They loved them!

Also last month, we held the 2nd Annual Fall Ball.  All the girls were in dresses and the boys were all in shirt and ties. Everyone looked so nice! We danced, ate cookies, and had a balloon drop. We also crowned a prince, princess, and queen for the dance. The Principe was Martin Chavez, Princesa was Laura, and Senorita de Otono was Jenny. We received a crown, flower, and lollipops. It was a lot of fun to have "prom" again at OSSO.

Next up we have Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Still lots of fun to be had before leaving. Let's just hope I get feeling better and gain a little more umph!

Adoption Day...

My heart is beyond full! Jhon and Domenica met their adoptive parents this mroning and spent the day with them. It was the most perfect day and I'm so unbelievably grateful for the opportunity to be apart of such a beautiful occasion. I was helping train new volunteers in Alegria so I was able to help Jhon and Dome get ready to meet their parents. My mom had bought Jhon new church clothes that I decided to give him for his adoption. He wore a salmon colored church shirt with tie and black pants that actually fit him. Genaro's sister had sent some donations to my sister's house in the States when I was home so I could bring the to OSSO. In the donations was a beautiful red Christmas dress with a white furry shawl. I saved this for Dome to wear for her adoption. I decided to curl Dome's hair which turned out beautiful! I felt so honored to get the kids ready for their big day! They looked so beautiful! Jhon looked sharp in his new clothes and Dome was a beautiful little princess! Her mami had given her a new Barbie that also was wearing a red dress. It was perfect!

Suzanne and I had the kids in Dome's room while everyone entered Alegria. There was the Rosero's, Laura, Marica, Soraya, the parent's lawyer/social worker Christian, and their new parents, Luis and Nube. Luis and Nube were right in the middle of the room as Jhon and Dome walked out holding flowers for their mami y papi. They gave the biggest hugs and the look on Nube's face touched my heart that I started to tear up with tears of joy. I couldn't hold them back. My heart was filled with so much love and happiness for all of them. There was a mother and father who probably tried for years to concieve children but were not able to. Then there was two children who longed for a family, a mami y papi to love them. And just like that, they found one another. Luis and Nube live in Azogues which is the next town past Cuenca and have no other children. It was all so perfect! God is good and with many prayers, they were finally answered!

I went in to see the kids before HML and Jhon summoned me to come to his room from the window, "Kirstin Kirstin". I went to his room where he showed me the toys he got from the mall and told me about his day. Soraya was talking to him so I went in to visit with Ceci. All of sudden Jhon comes running in with a note, "Kirstin Kirstin!" He gives me his note and THE biggest hug! My heart sank with joy. I have spent one year with this boy. He has become part of my life. His hug was his goodbye and the ending of living in the orphanage. It's time for the next chapter in Jhon's life. I am so proud of that boy. Unbelievably proud! I am beyong happy for both Jhon and Domenica. They finally received the family they always deserved. God bless you Jhon and Domenica. Kirstin loves you very very much!

Te amo mucho!

**Jhon and Domenica are the ONLY Ecuadorians (besides the Rosero's) who have been able to pronounce Kirstin correctly. I will miss that!

I miss them already...

Flying Home...

I'm once again on a plane on my way home. I'm surprising mom for her 60th birthday. It's going to be awesome! I've been horrible at writing and so much has happened. Carlitos went home with his grandparents and I just got word a couple days ago that Jhon and Dome have been assigned to a family! I am so happy for them! They could be gone before I get back which makes me sad but I will be so excited for them!

Once we landed in Atlanta, anxiety took over my body. I didn't like hearing English be spoken. The airport was busy with tons of people. The calmness and peace Cuenca would bring is gone. I don't want to be here. I went through customs and they want to know where you're going, what you're doing, what you bought, how much alcohol did you buy, etc. I know they were doing their job but I felt threatened to come back into my own country. Then the security... you may as well just get naked. It's all routine, I know, but I didn't like it. I like Ecuador where you keep your shoes on and can carry your own water bottle onto the plane.

I'm nervous about being home. So many people and the craziness that is everywhere you go. I'm nervous to drive again. What a luxury a taxi has been! I'm not ready for my nieces and nephews to fight. Our children rarely ever fight. Questions family will ask but they won't understand. I don't even know how to act with friends. What are we even suppose to talk about? They will have no idea nor will comprehend my lifestyle. I don't even want to try to explain it to them. I already miss the kids! I just don't like the way I'm feeling right now. Maybe coming home in between my service wasn't such a great idea. Ahh! I don't know! I'm just nervous and feeling anxious about being home and living a day without those kids. Will I even be leaving in January? I can only imagine how I'll be feeling then...

Just a Little Update About Alegria...

Casa Alegria are all doing well. Cecilia still has good days and bad days. A couple weeks ago her breathing wasn't stellar. It sounded as if her lungs were filling up with fluid. As always, she bounced back! Her coloring doesn't look good but she's still able to pull a smile out every once in awhile!

Dayana is Miss Drama Mama. She cries when she doesn't get what she wants or just because. She has started running and still working on using her words. Usually her words are "ssss" or "kaaa". She does say "por favor" which is pretty adorable. I love seeing her little personality come out!

Bryan is doing great work with his walking. He now will hold onto the back of Orvi's chair and walk down the ramp and around the grounds. He isn't walking alone but he's getting there. We just need to get his little legs stronger. He has started to laugh more which is so funny. Especially when he accomplishes walking someplace or getting there by wheeling himself in the stroller. He is so proud of himself.

Jhon is a mischievous little 5 year old! The last couple nights I have been going up at night to read books to the kids. The other night I read 3 books but then the kids decided they wanted pillows and blankets. So there I was on the mat, holding Carlitos, and a book, with Cristian to my right and Jhon to my left, and Dome, Dayana, and Manuel at my feet. I read Dr. Seuss's book "The Sleep Book" twice before they would settle down. After reading books, Jhon went and got his hymn book. Great! Poor Carmita had to listen to my singing! Jhon's favorites are "Angels We Have Heard on High" and "Silent Night". It took a few rounds of songs before they would all be asleep. Jhon kept reaching for my hand which I couldn't refuse! It was a really precious moment to have shared with those kids!

While I was reading books with the kids, I grabbed Carlos from his crib so he could join us. The poor baby was burning up! Suzanne had come in and checked his temperature. It was 101 degrees! I started to put cold rags on his head to help cool him down. I stayed with him until his temperature had dropped at least a couple degrees. He was not comfortable in his bed at all so I just held him so he could sleep. I got really worried when his temp spiked up to 102 and there was no obvious signs of it dropping. About an hour after giving him medication and instructing Carmita to not bundle him up, he was able to sit comfortably and get some rest. Although he was not feeling well, I was happy to love him and care for him for a few hours. Carlitos is so precious and a joy to have here at OSSO.

Domenica is growing big. She has such a sweet and spunky personality. She loves doing crafts, puzzles, and playing any type of game. She is a huge help in Alegria by getting tables ready for mealtime, putting clothes in the basket, and doing anything you ask her to do. She can be a pill if she doesn't get a nap in but that's understandable. Also, Dome and Jhon are the only ones that can actually say my name correctly! It's so cute when they do!

Cristian is still good ole Cristian. Pure excitement and genuine enthusiasm. The kid can test my patience but his enthusiasm over the simplest things make me love this kid so much more. He loves being outside, playing in dirt, and beating to his own drum. He LOVES balloons, "BOMBAS!!!!" His reaction to things reminds me that it truly is the small things that count!

Manuel... that kid! He's been screeching lately and has been obsessed with doorknobs. Every door or cupboard he has to open and close it before slamming it shut. Usually it's when the tia is in with Ceci that he's playing with the door and then slams it shut, keeping the tia trapped in Ceci's room. Manuel just laughs. He still loves his music and clapping his hands!

Orvi has been sick this week with a high fever, just like Carlos. Orvi's laugh still makes my heart melt. Manuel has begun tickling Orvi's knees and feet making him laugh. Last week Manuel had pushed Orvi over in his chair onto the mat. Thank goodness for the mat! So now we have to keep a close eye when Manuel is tickling Orvi!

Jhon and Domenica are finally up for adoption and Carlos will soon be home with his grandparents. I love being able to share moments with these children because you never know the time you have left with them. Whether it's due to adoption, being reinserted with family, or death. I love my Casa Alegria ninos and the spirit they bring into my life!
